Recently I had an opportunity to interact with Mr. T A Majeed, proprietor of Fair Pharma of Cochin. As you all know, he was in the media limelight till recent time for his innovation of some Ayurvedic medicines for the deseases which doesn't have any remedy in modern medicine. While discussing, he touched some points on Cancer and its Chemotherapy treatment. He intelligently raised some questions on its treatment which I felt really interesting and admirable. So I thought I would reproduce his stray thoughts on the subject for bloggers' reading and comments.

"STRAY THOUGHTS ABOUT CANCER, AIDS AND CHEMOTHERAPY "
David Baltimore, the path breaking American biologist and co-recipient of the 1975 Nobel prize in Physiology and Medicine was on a lecture tour of India during Jan 14 -18, 2008. David Baltimore was instrumental in providing the evidence for the conversion of RNA into DNA. Reverse Transcriptase which brings about this synthesis provided the key to the understanding of many retrovirus including HIV virus.
This article is mainly to throw light on the fact that cancer could be viral. I would venture to say that cancer is viral – but the never ending controversies would ensue. Oncologist says that cancer and AIDS are two sides of the same coin. And that is why they treat cancer and AIDS with chemotherapy. AZT the base material of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is nothing but chemotherapy and this is being administered to HIV/AIDS patients from 1985. AZT stands for Azidothymidine and is often marketed under the names Zidovidine, Retrovir etc.
The German Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II, addressed Robert Koch in 1905 at a reception in honor of his Nobel Prize: “My dear Professor, now you must get the cancer bug”. Despite the imperial encouragement, the cancer microbiology remained wanting. Bacteria, fungii and other microorganisms were isolated and proposed as candidates. But none could be proved as the cancer bug.
Payton Rous, a virologist, who worked at New York’s Rockofeller Institute, made a dramatic finding. When a farmer brought him a chicken with a large, well developed solid tumor, Rous discovered that some filterable virus from the bird produced amazingly rapid tumors in other chickens within weeks or even days of infection. The Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) is a retrovirus. “The hall mark of retrovirus is not to kill the cell it infects. As such they are potential carcinogens”.
In the Japanese island of Kyushu as well as in certain parts of Africa and among Caribbean people a number of patients were spotted with leukemia. It is in the blood of these patients that “spreading” retrovirus was spotted. Robert Gallo the scientist who found HIV/AIDS virus later named this leukemia retrovirus, HTLV – Human T Cells Leukemia Virus. This happened in 1981 – 3 years prior to the find of the actual AIDS virus by the same scientist.
When Gallo found the first retrovirus in human being (till then it was thought retrovirus could be the monopoly of the animal kingdom) in 1981, scientists said “if the HTLV retrovirus produced in certain rare leukemia cause the anarchic multiplication of white cells, it was easy to imagine that a very subtle genetic modification in the virus might conversely bring about, as in AIDS cases, the death of those same infected lymphocytes. It was a seductive piece of deduction”. To make it more clear, in AIDS patients WBC is decreased and in leukemia patients WBC is increased. In other words, the actions of retrovirus in both these cases are on WBC. That is why Gallo inferred that these should be the same virus with a genetic variation.
Next to Payton Rous’ findings that tumor could be a viral infection, Gallo’s finding that leukemia is a viral lead us to think that cancers should be viral. And till date there is no indication that it could be due to some other unknown microorganisms.
The dissenting scientists argue that Koch’s postulates enunciated in 1884 does not establish that cancer is viral. According to Robert Koch a microbe guilty of causing a disease should have these three qualities?
1. First, the germ must be found growing abundantly in every patient and every diseased tissue.
2. Second, the germ must be isolated and grown in the laboratory.
3. Third, the purified germ must cause the disease in another host.
Some stray thoughts about the cause of cancer: After atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki the population there developed mainly cancer. The majority of death in these two cities are even now recorded as due to cancer. Here my assumption is the microorganisms in and around that area have been converted into cancer causing viruses due to radiation.
Similarly asbestos, benzene, nicotine etc too should be helping this conversion.
The doctors say that too much of Xray can cause cancer. Does it not mean that certain virus or bacteria or fungii gets converted to carcinogens due to radiation? Madam Curie died of cancer – naturally cancer due to radiation. Then how could radiation be a treatment for cancer!
Hepatitis B is a virus – scientists say that causes liver cancer or cancer elsewhere in the body. Hepatitis C causes liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hope every scientist would agree that these are viral beyond doubt.
Scientists say that Papilloma virus causes breast cancer, uterus cancer and cancer elsewhere!
Our grandmothers used to say that curd should never be mixed with hot rice and if it is consumed as such, it could cause jaundice. Jaundice is mostly caused by virus. The bacteria in curd could possibly get converted into virus due to heat and this could be the reason for jaundice. Now the argument is that jaundice is a symptom and not a disease and let us ignore this as grandmothers’ talk.
When so much is said about cancer – virus connection even in the scientific world, why shy away from announcing that cancer is a viral disease. Probably multinational companies stand in the way – because how could they then sell chemotherapy for cancer. Why not? They sell chemotherapy for AIDS!!
Treatments for cancer: “Toxicity of AZT (Chemotherapy) is very high. Since AZT cannot distinguish infected from uninfected cells and only 1 in 500 T-Cells is ever infected, it kills
499 uninfected T-Cells for every infected T-Cell. And there is no convincing evidence that it is beneficial to kill infected Cell” – says the famous virologist and scientist Peter Duesberg.
“The most important toxic effect of chemotherapy is the suppression of the bone marrow due to the drug inhibiting the replication of the precursor cells of the blood stream which are housed in the bone marrow. These precursor cells need to multiply rapidly to continue replenishing the cells of the blood stream as they die off. More than half of all patients on long term therapy will require blood transfusions to replenish their blood cells because of the suppression of the bone marrow” – says Barry D. Schoub in his book “A Guide to Understanding the Virus and its Consequences”. In these circumstances how does bone marrow transplantation help in the treatment of cancer? Is it not the chemotherapy that plays havoc on bone marrow?
The Pneumocystis carinii microbe that caused pneumonia was known to inhibit the lungs of almost every human on the planet; the disease rarely struck anyone but cancer patients (before AIDS was detected), whose chemotherapy treatments would destroy their immune systems and leave them vulnerable to such normally benign germs.

● Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of cancer in the world.
Tobacco causes cancer of the lungs, throat, mouth, pancreas, bladder, stomach, liver, kidney etc.
● One fifth of cancers worldwide are due to chronic infections, mainly from hepatitis B (causing liver), human papilloma viruses HPV (causing cervix), the liver fluke (bile duct) and human immune deficiency virus HIV (Kapose Sarcoma and Lymphomas).

Time magazine on Nov. 8, 99 wrote “every type of cancer from brain to breast to bowel is different”. The same article says “but there is reason to hope that within 25 years new drugs will be able to ameliorate most if not all cancers and may even cure some of them”. A wild guess – that too without establishing the cause!
The article continues: “Treatments for more advanced cancers, however, are farther over the horizon than anybody can see. What is clear is that oncologists must take a page from AIDS treatment and use a cocktail of drugs with very different modes of action to outsmart
tumors that have already begun to spread or metastasize”. What a suggestion!! In the adjoining page of the same Time Weekly magazine the originator of cocktail for AIDS, Dr. David Ho Writes, “a cure for AIDS is not inconceivable”.
Dr. Ho in his article literally disowns cocktail. Ellen Stovall, Executive Director of National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, said, “I don’t think curing cancer is the goal. Instead it should be helping people live as long and as well as they can. We probably won’t cure all forms of cancer on the 21st Century. But we may very well learn to live with them”.
21st Century is another 91 years. Where the hope is: If you look at the scientific rhetoric, it is easy to make out how they “aim” to fool us. We will learn to live with expensive chemotherapy and radiation!!! Who will give us the money to spend on chemotherapy and radiation?
Primary and Secondary: Cell multiplication is what is being tested for to confirm cancer. The reason for cell multiplication is not being thought of. In fact there is no attempt to get at that. A microscope powerful enough to detect the virus is the basic necessity of our time. This would help the scientific world to avoid wild guess work. (even in the case of HIV/AIDS many scientists believe that AIDS is tertiary stage of syphilis and there is no such microbe called HIV). I personally don’t think such microscopes are impossible to manufacture, but that would prevent the flow of billions of dollars to the virus hunters. (Dark field microscope too is insufficient to spot a virus).
In this connection I would like to recall the disease called SMON a frightening disease epidemic that struck Japan in the 1950s. This disease was attributed to virus. Virus hunters spent nearly 20 years in search of the “unknown” virus and finally scientists found that this disease SMON was due to side effects of a drug CLIQUINOL consumed by patients with intestinal problem. These 20 years of research and millions of dollars could have been saved if there were a microscope powerful enough to see the virus.
Finally before I conclude I would like to point out the universally used words, in connection with cancer, Primary and Secondary. When you see a tumor doctors say that it is primary and then they remove it. This tumor is due to cell multiplication and the biopsy would have proved it malignant. According to science, liver stores all the chemicals (100%) required for the body and liver is the chemical workshop.
Any tumor or any ailment is due to chemical imbalance. Blood naturally is the carrier and the virus would be there through out our body in the blood – wherever the blood flows.
The chemical imbalance in the liver would have been brought about by some microorganism that has entered the body and this change in the liver is both primary and secondary.
The cancer does not travel from the tumor to the liver and present day findings that it has spread and has reached the secondary stage does not carry weight.
The bane of the present day science is that they have nothing to offer for the chemical workshop of the body, the liver, and that explains why many diseases are termed incurable diseases. A medicine for the virus would have solved half their problem.
Robert Gallo said, “In order to be able to treat people effectively, you had first to learn how things work. Above all you had to know the mysteries of life”.
Many believe that certain viruses are prepared in the laboratories of super powers. If so, stopping any medicine coming up (especially in other branches of science) to kill the virus is a very cruel joke on humanity.

I hope this article was originally authored by this wonder-drug giant Mr. TA MAJID. Or is this one of your fantasies ?
Whatever that may be, the statement quoted above is the stupidest statement in the whole of biology.
I earnestly request you to read something about what a bacteria is and how does it differ from a virus, before quoting nincompoops like Majid. Or else it would be like “തൂറിയവനെ ചുമന്നാല് ചുമന്നവനും നാറും!”
If a bacteria, as you say in this essay, can transform into a virus, then i would say that a horse can be transformed into an elephant !
I just saw thir article. Please! It is a pity that even educated people (knowingly and unknowingly) are falling prey to such frauds. Think of illiterate masses who get cheated by such fraudulent practices.
I have given more comments on the malayalam version. I must say that I like your stories in malayalam, but not this one, as I have had the opportunity to work with, and know the issues of people living with HIV/AIDS, children affected by AIDS. I have seen hundreds of children orphaned by AIDS, and hundreds of grandparents taking care of their grand children (in Andhra Pradesh & some parts of tamil Nadu). Most of them have spent all their money to frauds. Believe me, when they come to know about their HIV status, the first place they go is such frauds, who promiss them of cure of AIDS. This happens mainly due to the fear of lack of confidentiality in word of mouth publicity for frauds by their agents in testing centres! etc.). When they are broke, they go to Government hospitals, and die there, or get cured for some of the opportunistic infections.
In essence, I should say that by publicising such fraudulent practices, we are also doing harm to already vulnerable populations.Your blog is your property.However, as a person who have worked with people living with HIV/AIDS, I am really agitated at this senseless article.

I am sorry Murali. I am not interested in debating with Mr. Majeed. I am only a public health worker, who has worked with hundreds of people living with HIV/AIDS, and he is a businessman. He will have his own justifications to what he does.
Peter Duesberg,the world renowned virologist ,says: AZT is a chain terminator of DNA synthesis, originally developed for cancer chemotherapy to kill actively dividing cells.Since 1987,it has been prescribed to AIDS patients to inhibit HIV,and since 1989 even to healthy people who have antibodies to HIV as AIDS profilaxis.
Suraj says that AZT and chemotherapy are different! – a real invention!!

It is time one knows more about AZT especially because it is the AZT lobby that has been punishing me for the last 15 ½ years.Ever since the time of Alexander the Great who is believed to have died of viral disease 2300 years ago, all attempts to find a cure for viral diseases have failed.Why an outcry when somebody comes up with a cure for virus?If any one comes up with a claim to cure viral diseases WHO should take the initiative to test that medicine – because an antiviral drug is so badly needed for the world.There is no cure for Hepatitis B,Hepatitis C,Chikun Gunya,Dengi fever,bird flu,etc,etc.
Recently Dr.Iqbal the former Vice Chancellor of Kerala University wrote AIDS is like diabetes and blood pressure;you can live with it by taking ART – whose main component is AZT in different names.He too promotes ART!

Here I would like to remark if the AZT(chemotherapy) can stop the functions of bone marrow,why ask the cancer patient to change the bone marrow at an exhorbitant cost?

Many Americans believe that HIV virus has been made by CIA.CIA in turn has blamed FBI.In other words both America and Russia believes that it is made for biological warfare.So Can’t I believe or think it can be made/converted by heat,radiation or by some other chemical process?Can’t I have the freedom to indulge in stray thoughts?

India has more HIV-positive people than any other nation on earth. Unable to afford established meds--and fearing social persecution--they often turn to cure merchants like T.A. Majeed
The route to T.A. Majeed's house in Kerala, in the coastal region of southern India, takes you past a ramshackle assortment of fruit stalls, tea stands and billboards shouting the latest cell phone offers. As the potholed road bends toward his home, half-developed land plots appear like scars on the landscape. And then, suddenly, a blinding marble palace arises, shimmering amid the hot, damp air. The name of Majeed's estate is set in brass on the polished black plaque on a driveway gate. In loud, 5-inch letters, it reads: VIRUS.
The house has rosewood walls and teak details. The 11 bedrooms sprawl over three floors. The Kashmiri silk carpets are exquisite. The pool, steam room, game room and home movie theater could belong to any three-car-garage mansion in Bethesda or Brentwood. At the top of Majeed's grand staircase, a 50-square-foot marble mural inlaid with semiprecious stones spells out religious benedictions. Majeed paid the craftsmen who maintain the Taj Mahal to work on the mural for one year; the house took three to complete.
So why is Majeed, 69, so sad? He rubs his eyes under his bifocals and sighs.
"Nobody wants a medicine for AIDS," he says. "For 14 years, I've been fighting a lone battle." Since 1993, Majeed has pushed for the right to sell Immuno-QR, his self-proclaimed cure for AIDS. And now the Indian courts have stopped him, at least temporarily. Overweight, with thinning salt-and-pepper hair, Majeed leans quietly into his custom-made furniture. "I'm not frustrated." Majeed pauses for dramatic effect, his grandchildren (he has seven) squealing in the background. "I'm really sad."
"It's not the money," he adds. "Frankly, people are dying. AIDS is a terrible death. They choke to death on their own coughing," he says. "An AIDS patient never smiles."
Majeed says he has treated-and cured-more than 160,000 patients since 1993. Yet when pressed to produce one, he demurs. Majeed's assertion is a curious claim for a mining engineer with no medical background. Defending himself, Majeed asks: "Can I fool that many people? If I fool that many people, I should get the Nobel Prize for cheating."
Indeed, Majeed is famous. In clinics from his home state of Kerala to Chennai, on the opposite side of southern India, and to New Delhi and Amritsar in the north, patients and health workers alike know of "Majeed medicine" or "Kerala medicine."
Part of his success springs from a widespread faith in the ancient tradition of Ayurvedic, or indigenous Indian, medicines. Majeed likes to tell a story about how his younger sister was cured of polio by an Ayurvedic doctor when all the Western doctors had given up hope. But health officials are quick to point out the difference between proven forms of indigenous treatments and the offerings of people like Majeed, who lays claim to a cure for AIDS ("It kills the virus within three days, undoubtably," he says) in either pill or syrup form.
"[Ayurvedic] medicine has been used in India for thousands of years," says Dr. Suniti Solomon, the director of YRG CARE, India's largest private clinic treating AIDS patients. "But I object to these fellows coming and saying I have a cure for AIDS." YRG CARE conducts long-term studies on optimal drug treatment regimens in conjunction with the U.S. National Institutes of Health and Brown University.
Dr. Tokugha Yepthomi, an HIV/AIDS clinician and research associate at YRG CARE, says at least 50 percent of the 9,000 patients the clinic sees have been exposed to different kinds of indigenous medicine before coming to the clinic, usually when the disease is in its advanced stages.
"There is no scientific data at all," Dr. Solomon says of the various Ayurvedic and other such approaches to HIV. "[The practitioners] don't want to reveal what is inside their powders. We want to do studies; and they say that if we give you the names, you will prepare it yourself and make money out of it."
Majeed says his Immuno-QR compound contains 23 different herbs, and while he is terse in describing how he discovered the exact formulation ("it was given by God"), he can and will speak for hours about what he contends is the combined, coordinated effort of multinational corporations, the World Health Organization, the Indian government and private physicians to thwart his enterprise.
"People are only talking about vaccination, and they don't want a medicine that can kill the virus," Majeed says. "The medical world has become a thriving industry."
India is home to the world's largest population of HIV-positive people, numbering around 5.7 million (a distinction long held by South Africa until last year). Of those Indians, around 800,000 have developed AIDS and require daily drug therapy to fend off tuberculosis and other deadly diseases that prey upon their weak immune systems. About 80 percent of the population still live on less than US$2 a day. Between that poverty and the stigma of AIDS, many people would rather hand over all their earnings to Majeed-or one of many other similar cure merchants-than begin a lifelong regimen of more expensive antiretrovirals. (Immuo-QR sells for anywhere from US$200 to US$300 for the entire 100-day maintenance treatment.)
Rail-thin Laxman, 39, shivers under a blanket in New Delhi's massive, labyrinthine, foul-smelling top teaching hospital, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. After doctors in the district hospital in his home state of Bihar told him that they lacked the AIDS drugs to help him, Laxman traveled 1,000 kilo-meters to New Delhi in a third-class train, sleeping overnight on its rickety wooden benches. There is not a single government AIDS clinic in Bihar, so once a month, he will have to make this journey to receive antiretroviral drug therapy. Such desperation feeds the market for people like Majeed.
But on January 3 of this year, India's Supreme Court issued a decree-without holding a hearing-halting distribution of Immuno-QR. The ruling overturned the regional court in his home state of Kerala, which has been more favorable to his practice over the years. The Kerala court had even set aside the license suspensions issued by the state's drug controller's office.
Majeed first gained his license to manu-facture Immuno-QR-as a general health booster, not an AIDS cure-in 1993. Three years later, when the drug became a sensation, he issued a press release saying that it also offered a cure for HIV. In 1997, the drug controller of Kerala suspended his license. Majeed appealed, and in 1998, the government of Kerala said it would reconsider the matter after a committee it appointed conducted clinical trials on Immuno-QR. But the committee never got a chance to investigate the substance at all: Majeed was slow to supply a product sample. That delay, coupled with the snail-like Indian court system, allowed Majeed to work openly and successfully until just recently.
In 2000, a legal aid group in India, Lawyers Collective, together with a network of HIV-positive people in Mumbai, filed a petition in the Mumbai high court that resulted in Majeed's being barred from advertising a cure for AIDS. "It is high time the Indian government get its act together on this," says Anand Grover, the head of Lawyers Collective in Mumbai, who has been spearheading the effort to permanently revoke Majeed's operating license.
The Supreme Court decision in January forced Majeed to stop manufacturing, marketing, selling and distributing Immuno-QR, but allowed him to continue selling other remedies. It also ordered the Kerala High Court to hear the case against Majeed, supposedly within three months. But as of early June, no hearing had occurred. Lawyers working on the case now expect one, and then a final judgment, by late summer.
Among the dozen-odd patients I spoke to across India who had once taken Majeed's medicine but were now on government-supplied antiretroviral drugs (all claim to be feeling much better), none expressed a strong desire to pursue legal action against Majeed, wishing to hide their status.
Meanwhile, questionable AIDS remedies "are mushrooming all over India," says Vineeta Gupta, director of the Stop HIV/AIDS in India Initiative in Washington, DC, which provided medical services in India's cities and countryside for 15 years. "In rural as well as urban areas," Gupta says, "lack of affordable and efficient state-run health care structures results in these [remedies] being the only option for people in low socioeconomic strata. No political party wants to mess up with them, for fear of having an effect on their votes."
When the Indian government began opening free antiretroviral centers in 2004, it projected that patient enrollment would exceed 100,000 by early 2006. A year and a half later, those centers are barely serving half that number, despite no shortage of functionaries or funding.
Dr. Rakesh Bharti operates a clinic in northern India, near the border of Pakistan, which follows about 400 families with at least one HIV-infected member. The clinic raised the issue of Majeed at a conference with India's health minister in Bangkok, but no further action was taken. "In countries like India," Bharti says, "where you can get any medicine over the counter and where prescriptions carry no weight, anything that can be imagined can be practiced."
Consider the G.P. Institute, in Hyderabad, India's sixth largest city and a hub for its booming information technology industry. Medical officials there (with bona fide medical licenses) said that for $6,000, they would give me a cure for the virus. The cure is sold on a sliding scale; Western patients get charged more. One G.P. clinician, Dr. P.S.V. Satyanarayana, says the institute distills its cure from many herbs and then extracts from them a very small amount of chemicals. He spreads his arms wide and then brings his thumb and index finger less than an inch apart to illustrate the difference.
Dr. Satyanarayana, decked in gold-rimmed glasses, gold necklaces and rings, further elaborates by performing an abdominal exam on me, poking me four times around my navel. He says that if I were HIV positive (I am not), I would likely experience some pain during such an examination.
But after taking his magnificent medicine, the doctor promises, I would not feel any discomfort at all.

"The medical representatives description is the Doctors' (medical practitioners') prescription. After completing MBBS, the only thing that they know is to prescribe paracetamol. When the public started going directly to medical shop, that hope is also lost. The pharmaceutical world provides attractive commission/mementos/prizes to the doctors who prescribe their medicines to patients. All the reactions are realized subsequently. Patients are treated like guinnepigs. Suraj is also one of the doctors in the category boasting as a Xavier of patients.
